On June 4, 2009, a group of 78 attended a live presentation of US President Barak Obama's speech to the Muslim World at the Consul General's Residence. The participants included students from Karachi University, members of Rotract (youth affiliate of the Rotary Club), religious clerics, journalists and media representatives, IVLP alumni and members of the business community.

At the same time, Lincoln Corner Karachi held a viewing of the speech followed by a discussion session.  The speech was directly telecast by CNN International from Cairo University, Egypt. A group of 15 young students and volunteers from Jinnah University for Women and Young Social Reformers participated in the program.  U.S. Consul General in Karachi Stephen G. Fakan graced the event with his presence and greeted students and young social activists and thanked them for participating in this program.  He mingled with youth and interacted with them on issues.

Here are some of the group's comments:

  • This speech will bring positive change if he really means what he said. Action should support the words.
  • If the Palestine problem is solved, it would bring change in the world and erase frustration among the Muslim.
  • The closure of the Guantanamo Bay detention camps is a good gesture
  • As he said, one speech cannot remove all misconceptions. Department of State should do more dialogue with Muslim community to remove misconceptions that they have.
  • We should try to understand each other
